After weeks of promos during the World Series and Sunday’s NFL games, Fox’s new science fiction cop show “Almost Human” kicks off tonight. The show takes place in 2048, a time when robotics are so advanced that each police officer is assigned one as a partner. It also helps that these robots look just like people hence the name of the show, and not a Dalek from “Doctor Who”. Besides an interesting plot the show has big name director/producer J.J. Abrams attached to the show. From “Alias” and “Lost” to “Fringe” J.J. has always been attached to groundbreaking science fiction television.
Here’s the very long Fox synopsis of the show.
The year is 2048. Meet Detective JOHN KENNEX (Urban), a cop who survived one of the most catastrophic attacks ever made against the police department. After waking up from a 17-month coma, he can’t remember much – except that his partner was killed, he lost one of his legs and he is now outfitted with a highly sophisticated synthetic appendage.
Suffering from depression, mental atrophy, trauma-onset OCD, PTSD and the “psychological rejection of his synthetic body part,” John returns to work at the behest of longtime ally Captain SANDRA MALDONADO (Emmy Award nominee Lili Taylor, “Six Feet Under,” “Ransom”). By mandate, every cop must partner with a robot. And despite his passionate aversion to androids, John is paired up with a battle-ready MX-43. But he abruptly terminates his partnership after the robot discovers incriminating information about him. So technician RUDY LOM (Mackenzie Crook, “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise) introduces John to DORIAN (Ealy), a discontinued android with unexpected emotional responses. Although such responses were deemed flaws, it is in these “flaws” that John relates to Dorian most. After all, John is part-machine now, and Dorian is part-human. John and Dorian’s understanding of each other not only complements them, it connects them.
It is like if Data was assigned to work with Detective Stabler on a special episode of “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit”. Karl Urban, Dr. McCoy in J.J. Abrams “Star Trek” universe plays the lead role in the show. His American accent rivals Liam Neeson’s. He’s a great actor for this role because he can do comedy and action without losing audience credibility. When Ice-T runs someone down on “SVU” you wonder where he got that speed from. Urban looks like the type of guy who could run down a criminal.
Even more Data like is that DORIAN, the robot that will become his new partner, seems to have the same emotion chip problems that Trek’s favorite android did. DORIAN will no doubt aspire to be real. Urban will help teach DORIAN about life and not letting your emotions control you, while DORIAN will show him how to harness his own emotional problems. Oh and of course they will fight crime in the future so expect laser beams and technology we’ve never seen before.
