With less than a week away until the 2013 “Doctor Who” Christmas Special, BBC America has once again ginned up excitement among Who fans with the release of an extended trailer. This new trailer reveals a little more of the plot than the previous one. Besides more Dalek glimpses the promo focuses on this special being the last time we will see Matt Smith in the role of the Doctor. Smith has been a revelation as the 11th Doctor, and is partly responsible for the show’s recent surge in popularity. Smith was able to inject youth and vigor into the series.
The Christmas Special promises to not only be the last episode to feature Matt Smith, but also the first to feature the 12th Doctor played by Peter Capaldi. We got a glimpse of Capaldi’s eyebrows during the 50th Anniversary special, but the first real moment for Capaldi stays wrapped until Christmas. Here’s the minute long trailer from BBC America.
One thing we can bet on is that Capaldi’s version of the Doctor will be completely different than Smith’s take on the Tardis driving Time Lord. It’s a smart choice to cast an actor completely different than Smith because the show would be hurt if the next Doctor couldn’t differentiate himself from Smith. Capaldi is no doubt going to bring the edge and cutting wit we’ve seen him use before to great fanfare. Tune into BBC America this Christmas to be there when the 11th Doctor says goodbye and the 12th says hello.
