Right when “Orange is the New Black” became a must see show on Netflix, rumors began to fly about Laura Prepon not being a big part of season 2. Prepon plays Alex, the drug running former girlfriend of Piper who ratted her out to the government. The triangle of Alex, Piper, and Jason Biggs’ Larry is one of the best parts of the show. The rumor was the second season would focus less on Piper and more on the other colorful inmates such as Crazy Eyes or Red.
Now in an interview with US Weekly, “Orange is the New Black” creator Jenji Kohan refutes the rumors about Prepon’s Alex not being an integral part of season 2. Here’s how Kohan responded to US’ Alex question.
“Yes, yes, she is coming back,” Kohan told Us of the former That ’70 Show actress at the Writers Guild Awards on Saturday, Feb. 1. “Not the whole season, but…you’ll see her for most of it.”
That’s big news for the show. This was the year the award shows elevated “House of Cards” in the drama division. Season 2 of “Orange is the New Black” has the ability to do the same things in the comedy categories. The show has the right mix of sex, violence, and pop culture references. It’s a natural fit with Kohan’s previous hit “Weeds”. If only Nancy Botwin could stop by the prison to talk with the ladies about the virtues of living a clean life. Iced Coffee included.
Later in the interview Kohan does talk about the show becoming less about Piper and more about the group.
“It’s becoming much more of an ensemble,” Kohan said. “As much as I love Piper and Taylor and her journey, I think people are interested in everybody’s journey.”
Expect the release of the second season of “Orange is the New Black” sometime before the Summer of 2014.
