With the success of Arrow on CW and the buzz surrounding the upcoming Batman prequel series Gotham on FOX, it appears that NBC wants to get back in the superhero business and is actively developing a series based on the comic series Constantine.

The show is gaining steam at the network as a major piece of the cast has been added. According to Deadline, former Criminal Minds spinoff star Matt Ryan has been cast as the main character of John Constantine on the show.

Per Deadline:

Welsh actor Matt Ryan (Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior) is finalizing a deal to play the lead in NBC’s drama pilot Constantine, from Warner Bros TV.

The character was last played in a live action film called Constantine by Keanu Reeves. While the film was met with mixed reviews, fans of the original comic book have been clamoring for the story to be done right. That appears to be what NBC is after as The Dark Knight scribe David S. Goyer is behind the series with veteran filmmaker Neil Marshall set to direct the pilot episode.

Comic book characters are getting new life breathed into them thanks to television series, as you have to look no further than CW’s Arrow to see just how far a good television show can take the popularity of a character.
