The world of reality television and game shows has lost one of its most iconic names. Jim Lange, who was the original host of The Dating Game, died in his California home on Tuesday of what appears to have been a heart attack. Lange was 81 years old at the time of his death, and the televise history he saw in those 81 years is something of a wonder.
Lange will be best remembered as the first host of The Dating Game and he was a pioneer in game show television. While we now have an entire network dedicated to game shows, Lange helped pave the way for such a thing all the way back in the 1960s when he took on hosting duties for The Dating Game.
The entire point of The Dating Gameas to be risqué, and Lange helped make that a staple of the show by encouraging borderline inappropriate questions as well as riffing off of answers with his own scandalous jargon. The sexual innuendo used on the game is nothing compared to what we hear these days, but back in the day Lange was a rebel on television and his hosting duties on The Dating Game helped change television standards in more than one way.
