One reason for the success of FX’s “The Americans” is the cast of supporting characters around Philip and Elizabeth. Richard Thomas, whose was once the wholesome John-Boy Walton on “The Waltons”, is great as Stan’s boss at the FBI, Agent Gaad. The other great decision was Margo Martindale as Claudia, aka Grannie, the KGB supervisor in charge of the Jennings. The emotional and physical fight between Claudia and Elizabeth was one of the best parts of season 1.
Thomas’ Agent Gaad has been a fixture of the second season, especially with his assistant Martha feeding intel to Philip, but Martindale’s Claudia has been absent from the first three episodes because of her commitment to CBS’ “The Millers”. Claudia returns tonight in the all new episode, titled “A Little Night Music”, to convey the details of an upcoming mission. If Claudia is involved then you can count on there being fireworks.
Here’s the FX preview of tonight’s show.
Just when Philip and Elizabeth think they have a quiet road ahead, an old friend returns to complicate things. Not only do they have to intercept a target who could prove valuable to the Soviet Union, but they also have to take on an important rogue mission without the support of the Centre. Divisions inside the Rezidentura deepen between Oleg and Arkady and there’s an upheaval at the FBI as the chickens come home to roost for Agent Gaad. Meanwhile, Martha’s frustrations threaten to blow Philip’s cover.
It’s not a shock that Martha is getting frustrated over her love affair with “Clark”, one of Philip’s many cover identities. Martha’s story is one of the saddest on the show because we as viewers know she is being played. Martha is searching for love, and that’s what Clark provides her. What she doesn’t know is that the love is contingent on getting information about her boss Agent Gaad. Could “chickens coming home to roost” and problems with Martha be connected?
