Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. casts Patton Oswalt in guest role

Another big name has joined the ranks of ABC’s series Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as comedian and noted comic book geek Patton Oswalt has landed a guest role. The announcement of Oswalt’s casting was made directly through Marvel on their official press release site.

Per Marvel’s official site:

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” has recruited yet another special guest star with fan-favorite actor/comedian Patton Oswalt, who will join the cast as Agent Eric Koenig in an upcoming episode of the hit series.

Oswalt landing a role on S.H.I.E.L.D. is both surprising and perfect, but the decision could cloud the judgement of fans of the series. While Oswalt is an excellent actor and clearly comes in with a plethora of existing knowledge about the material he’s working on, fans may get skeptical about the amount of star power being forced on the show.

Bill Paxton was announced as an extended guest star not long ago, and the name dropping that goes on with superheroes seems to in no way disguise the crutch Marvel is leaning on.

Still, the show may not be the best thing on television but it’s clearly trying to break the mold of the standard it has set previously. The bottom may not have been touched yet, but Oswalt may help the series stay afloat for a little longer.
