As if we needed more proof that America has gone crazy over Game of Thrones. the ratings for the series 4 premiere were eye popping. Viewers returned to Westeros in numbers rarely seen in cable. Here’s the news from EW.com about the show’s record breaking performance.
The fourth-season premiere of the fantasy delivered the show’s biggest audience yet: 6.6 million viewers. That makes Sunday’s Thrones HBO’s most-watched program since The Sopranos’ series finale in 2007. Two replays of the Thrones episode drove the show’s full-night tally up to 8.2 million viewers.
Game of Thrones is peaking right now in the same way Breaking Bad did at the beginning of season 5. The critical praise for the show, and the rabid fan base was the perfect advertisement for binge watching. Season 4 of the show is on pace to be the most watched event ever on HBO. This news is even more enjoyable because last Sunday’s episode Two Swords was universally praised.
This puts more pressure on Fire and Ice author George R. R. Martin to finish his last two books in the series. Martin speculated recently that the show could end in a hundred million dollar movie. Looking at the ratings from the premiere that doesn’t seem so far off.
