NBC asking viewers for better sitcom ideas with 'Comedy Playground'

How many times have you been sitting at home watching a sitcom on a cable network only to think to yourself ‘wow, I could do better than this’. Well, now is your chance as NBC has decided to put the ball in the viewers court and has asked them to come up with their own sitcom ideas.

Sounds too good to be true? Well, it’s not thanks to NBC’s ‘Comedy Playground’ which will allow user submissions in hopes of giving the network some fresh, unique pilot ideas.

The broadcast network announced “an unprecedented effort to discover fresh comedic voices” on Tuesday by launching a national campaign offering aspiring comedy writers from around the country the chance to pitch their sitcom ideas.

“We are taking a bold, alternative approach in what we hope will uncover original comedy minds who are looking for a way to get into the television business,” said NBC entertainment president Jennifer Salke.

The network has enlisted some of their most trusted comedic brains to help with the process, a list which includes Aziz Ansari, Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, Mindy Kaling, Adam McKay, Seth Meyers, Mike Schur and Amy Poehler who will help pick through and find the top submissions.

Eventually, the winner(s) will have their pilot plus up to an additional four shows shown on NBC.

Pretty neat, right?

Submissions open up on May 1st. You can learn more about the contest by clicking here.
