If House of Cards is The Sopranos of Netflix than Orange is the New Black must be their Sex in the City. The envelope pushing prison comedy was one of the most talked about shows of 2013. The show, brought to life by Weeds creator Jenji Kohan, was both a real life look at women behind bars and a hilarious commentary on the priorities of the modern day woman.
Taylor Schilling was perfectly cast as Piper Chapman, the WASPy maker of organic soaps who finds herself locked up for being an unwilling drug mule during her crazy college years. Chapman might have entered the prison as a woman who thought her inmate footwear resembled Tom’s, but she ended the season as just another caged animal when she beat up Pennsatucky, her crazy tormentor. It was a classic case of nature over nurture.
The show also gave us fully realized characters in Red, Crazy Eyes, Morello, Taystee, Yoga Joan, and Nicky. Throw in Piper’s former lesbian lover Alex, played by Laura Prepon, and no where was safe for Piper.
The demand for season 2 of Orange is the New Black is only building, and Netflix has now released a new trailer for the upcoming season. Check it out below.
Season two is exclusively on Netflix in all territories on June 6, 2014.
