For many viewers the most memorable part of the 2014 Winter Olympics were a pair of people not even competing. NBC stuck gold when it put together Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski in the booth for the daytime Figure Skating broadcasts. With that success in mind NBC has announced that Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski will be apart the network’s Kentucky Derby coverage. Here’s the news from deadline.com.
Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski are back, on NBC Sports. The two will serve as fashion experts for NBC Sports Group‘s coverage of the 2014 Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby. NBC Sports Group’s live coverage from Churchill Downs begins April 30.
The decision to bring Weir and Lipinski to the Derby is hip and young, two things not normally associated with the biggest horse race of the year. It will definitely bring new viewers to the race just to see what sort of outfit Weir will sport. Bank on his use of multiple hats during the show’s broadcast. This could be the first instance of a sports department devoting time to a fashion expert. Why can’t we have Johnny on Football Night in America to discuss Jerry Jones’ new suit and face?
