Another major domino fell in the Late Night wars when Craig Ferguson announced that he would be leaving the Late Late Show on CBS when his contract expires in 2015. Ferguson’s name was mentioned in the conversation to replace Letterman at 11:30, but CBS decided to go with Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert instead. While there isn’t any animus reported between Ferguson and CBS, it appears he is following the strategy that Letterman laid out for him when he was passed over for the Tonight Show at NBC.
Last night David Letterman took time out from his show to mention the decision by Ferguson to leave the network. Letterman mentions that he was “sorry to hear” that Craig will be leaving the network. He goes on to mention a new show in the works for the Scottish host. Could Ferguson end up on a streaming platform like Netflix or Amazon Prime? There’s also the question of who CBS should look at to take over the 12:30 time slot behind Stephen Colbert’s new show. It would be nice to give a different group a chance at hosting then white men. Sarah Silverman would be an inspired choice to replace him.
