It would be an understatement to say that President Obama had a killer set of jokes at the 2014 White House Correspondents Dinner. The leader of the free world was on his game. President Obama has always been adept at these events, but with only two years left in his administration the gloves were off.
He spent time poking fun at all three of the major cable news networks. CNN’s obsession with finding the lost Malaysian airliner was a clever theme. MSNBC took some hits over the small size of their audience. Fox News, the leader in hyperbolic Obama coverage, was told that they’d miss the President when he was gone. His major reason for that formulation was that it would be much harder to convince the American people that Hilary Clinton was born in Kenya.
Joel McHale followed the President that night, and he suffered from performing after the Commander in Chief. The President just hit all the right notes. McHale got mixed reviews that trended towards negative. A major reason for that was the success of President Obama. After he was finished there really was no need for McHale to get on his feet.
