Dancing with the Stars: Week 8 Recap

This week the remaining six couples on Dancing with the Stars will take on a brand new routine as well as a mini-team dance in part of the series first “Celebrity Dance Duel”  challenge (more on that later).

This week there is no theme, but there is another guest judge. This week Dancing with the Stars welcomes Dance Moms’ Abby Lee Miller.

As with the previous weeks, the results will be given throughout the show. First to learn their fate are Charlie White and Sharna Burgess, who are safe! The couple will kick off the night performing first.

Charlie White & Sharna Burgess

Dance: Quickstep

Score: 40/40

Carre Anne Inaba: 10

Len Goodman: 10

Abby Lee Miller: 10

Bruno Tonioli: 10

This week Charlie’s quest for a 10 was finally achieved, as his quickstep earned him not one, but four 10′s. Charile’s quickstep was well deserving of the perfect score, as he managed to make the routine look effortless!

Time for more results. The next two couples to learn their fates are Meryl Davis & Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Danica McKellar Chmerkovskiy. Up first is Meryl & Maks who find out that they are safe (duh). However, Danica and Val are not as lucky and are informed that they are in jeopardy of being eliminated later this evening.

Danica McKellar & Valentin Chmerkovskiy

Dance: Tango

Score: 38/40

Carre Anne Inaba: 10

Len Goodman: 9

Abby Lee Miller: 9

Bruno Tonioli: 10

This week Danica received a near perfect score for her tango. Danica continues to keep herself at the top of the leader-board, but this week I felt she was just slightly off her game. Hopefully she can redeem herself in the Celebrity Dance duel.

Meryl Davis & Maksim Chmerkovskiy

Dance: Rumba

Score: 36/40

Carre Anne Inaba: 9

Len Goodman: 9

Abby Lee Miller: 8

Bruno Tonioli: 10

This week Meryl and Maks struggled with their rumba. The routine ended up looking more like a contemporary dance rather than a rumba, thus the fall from the leader-board. I also want to take the time to mention how very disappointed I was in Maks’ reaction to Abby Lee Miller’s critiques. She is on the show to act as a guest judge and give her honest critiques, Maks’ disrespect towards Miller may backfire next week as viewers do not like it when a professional or celebrity dancer disrespect a judge.

Time for more results. Up first, Amy Purdy & Derek Hough who find out that they are safe! Which means that James Maslow & Peta Murgatroyd and Candace Cameron Bure & Mark Ballas are both in jeopardy. Performing next are Candace & Mark.

Candace Cameron Bure & Mark Ballas

Dance: Foxtrot

Score: 36/40

Carre Anne Inaba: 9

Len Goodman: 9

Abby Lee Miller: 9

Bruno Tonioli: 9

Candace continues to improve on a week-to-week basis, and she could be the dark horse in the competition. Fans enjoy watching contestants grow as the competition goes on and no other celebrity dancer has shown more improvement than Candace. If she keeps improving on a week-to-week basis it’s only a matter of time before she sees her first perfect score.

James Maslow & Peta Murgatroyd

Dance: Vietnamese Waltz

Score: 36/40

Carre Anne Inaba: 8

Len Goodman: 9

Abby Lee Miller: 10

Bruno Tonioli: 9

James struggled slightly this week in his Vietnamese Waltz, and the judges scores reflected upon his struggles. However, I myself agreed with Abby Lee Miller in giving James a 10. James has a strong presence on the dance floor and has natural musicality.

Amy Purdy & Derek Hough

Dance: Argentine Tango

Score: 40/40

Carre Anne Inaba: 10

Len Goodman: 10

Abby Lee Miller: 10

Bruno Tonioli: 10

After suffering a serious injury and exiting the show early to head to the hospital last week, many weren’t sure whether Amy would be able to continue in the competition. All doubts were put to rest when Amy hit the dance floor for her best routine yet. Derek choreographed an amazing Argentine Tango for Amy and the couple earned a perfect score of 40 out of 40.

Time for the Celebrity Dance Duel. In this all new challenge the two couples will be partnered up for a mini team dance, the catch: the two celebs will have to perform part of the routine without the celebrity partners. Up first is the pair of Meryl & Maks and Danica & Val.

Celebrity Dance Duel 1: Meryl Davis & Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Danica McKellar

Dance: Samba

Score: 34/40

Carre Anne Inaba: 8

Len Goodman: 9

Abby Lee Miller: 8

Bruno Tonioli: 9

Meryl & Danica’s celebrity dance duel was unexpectedly sloppy. When dancing with their professional partners as well as in their celebrity solo routine, the pair were off when they should have been in sync. We also managed to get round two of Abby Lee Miller vs. the Chmerkovskiy brothers, as Val snapped back at the guest judge’s critique of Danica and Meryl’s loose frame.

Celebrity Dance Duel 2: Candace Cameron Bure & Mark Ballas and Charlie White & Sharna Burgess.

Dance: Contemporary

Score: 38/40

Carre Anne Inaba: 9

Len Goodman: 9

Abby Lee Miller: 10

Bruno Tonioli: 10

Wow! I honestly did not expect Charlie and Candace’s contemporary routine to be as strong as it was. The dance was full of passion and the celebrity solo portion of the dance was, in my opinion, the best of the night.

Celebrity Dance Duel 3: James Maslow & Peta Murgatroyd and Amy Purdy & Derek Hough.

Dance: Jive

Score: 39/40

Carre Anne Inaba: 9

Len Goodman: 10

Abby Lee Miller: 10

Bruno Tonioli: 10

The celebrity dance duel ended on a high note, as James and Amy delivered a wonderfully, entertaining jive. After a rocky week in rehearsal, the duo delivered a stunning jive. Simply put, the routine was phenomenal.

Time for the final results. First to be sent to safety are Candace & Mark, which means either James & Peta or Danica & Val will be eliminated. Dim the lights and cue the elimination music. The couple leaving the show tonight is…. Danica & Val.

Are you sad to see Danica & Val leave?
