The season two pick-up may come as a surprise to many, as the freshman series has only aired three episodes so far this season. However, when you consider the rating success the series has had (Salem premiered to 1.5 million viewers, becoming the most watched telecast on the network in seven years), it makes perfect since why WGN America has opted for an early renewal.
Matt Cherniss, WGN America President, credits Salem‘s fascinating characters and great storytelling to the series success and early renewal:
“At WGN America, we are committed to delivering compelling, brand-defining programming rich with fascinating characters and Salem has done just that. [Co-creators/executive producers] Brannon Braga, Adam Simon, the talented cast and our great partners at Fox 21 have opened up an intriguing world that has captivated viewers. We look forward to bringing more great storytelling, scares and surprises to viewers as the saga unfolds.”
Salem stars Seth Gabel, Janet Montgomery and Shane West in a series that re-imagines the 17th century Salem witch trials, as the accused witches actually do cast spells and curses on the citizens of Salem.
The second season of Salem is set to start production later this year, with season two slated to air in 2015.
Salem airs Sundays at 10/9c on WGN America.
