2014 X Games Austin Full Recap

Another X Games is in the books.

The 2014 X Games took place this weekend, as the world’s best and brightest action sports stars came together to compete in a series of events all in hopes of taking home X Games gold.

After a decade in LA, the X Games moved to Austin, Texas for their 20th anniversary. This year’s X Games featured the return of fan favorite events as well as new events such as this year’s Super Trucks.

Making X Games history, skateboarder Tom Schaar (photoed above with silver medalist Bob Burnquist, left, & bronze medalist Edgard Pereira, right) became the second youngest skateboarder in X Games history to take home a gold medal. At 14 years old, Schaar’s victory in Skateboard Big Air also makes him only fit athlete to win gold in the event.

Another skateboarder to make X Games history was relative newcomer Jimmy Wilkins. Wilkins gold medal win in Skateboard Vert, makes Wilkins the youngest skateboard to win gold in vert (a record that was previously held by Shaun White).

Austin’s X Games debut did not come without its share of drama, as the events faced weather related issues. Due to high winds over the weekend events such as Moto X Speed & Style and the BMX Big Air both faced wind-related delays. While both events went forward, the standard of tricks was slightly down as the athletes could not safely perform their more extreme tricks. The windy conditions were so bad on Saturday and Sunday that the event committee and Moto X athletes voted to cancel this year’s Moto X Freestyle competition.
