Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the Atlanta Falcons are set to be featured on this year of HBO’s Hard Knocks.
Falcons’ fans will be taken behind the scenes into the lives of Falcons’ players and coaches following the team during the pre-season training camp and games of the 2014 season. Howard Katz, COO of NFL Films and NFL senior vice president of broadcasting looks forward to working with the Falcons through the HBO Sports’ series:
“We’re excited to work with the Atlanta Falcons and HBO Sports on Hard Knocks. The Falcons present numerous shorelines with a veteran coaching staff, star players and newcomers all coming together to attempt to rise back to the top of the NFC.”
Following a dismal season (the Falcons finished last season with a record of 4-12), the team looks to reclaim their spot back at the top of the NFC. As Katz detailed, the Falcons also bring to the table a veteran coaching staff including a head coach who may very well find himself in hot-water if the team doesn’t turn things around this season.
Believe it or not though, the Falcons were not HBO’s first choice for this season. HBO was hoping to land the Cleveland Browns who drafted this year’s most talked about draft candidate in Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel. However the franchise, who welcomes a new head coach, decided to pass on the opportunity. Browns’ coach Mike Pettine notes that the team is currently in a transitional stage and prefers to focus on getting through this season:
“It was for the same reason we didn’t feel super comfortable having a camera in the draft room. Let’s get through the first time, let’s get through the first year.”
Hard Knocks returns for its ninth season Tuesday, August 5 for a five-episode run.
