Everyone knows the lesson on not judging a book by its cover, but NBC’s new show Taxi Brooklyn is making that nearly impossible. NBC is way behind in the crime procedural genre, even though its Law & Order franchise were a keystone in the genre’s resurgence, but they can’t really be serious with this show. Taxi Brooklyn dares to ask what happens to a tough female police detective whose driving privelidges have been taken away by the NYPD. Well she just finds a sad Taxi driver to blackmail. Yes, Taxi Brooklyn is the story of a Detective who can’t drive, and a Taxi drive who can’t solve crimes. Together NBC thinks they will make sweet music together. Call me skeptical.
If you are excited for Taxi Brooklyn then I suggest you keep this first episode saved on your home DVRs because it might be the only one you get to see. I could be wrong here, and Taxi Brooklyn could become the next CSI franchise, but I doubt it. Imagine the excitement of Taxi Chicago and Taxi Dallas/Fort Worth. Here’s the complete series description from NBC. I challenge anyone to read it without shaking their head or rolling their eyes.
Chyler Leigh stars as hard-as-nails Det. Caitlyn “Cat” Sullivan, a woman hell-bent on finding her father’s killer. After she’s demoted to foot patrol for reckless driving, disobeying orders and personality conflicts, Cat meets taxi driver Leo Romba (Jacky Ido). A highly skilled driver, Leo is a charming French African from Marseille. Realizing Leo lied on his immigration forms, Cat offers him a deal: In exchange for his driving skills and taxi, she will help Leo with his immigration problem. In order to stay out of prison and avoid deportation, Leo agrees to partner with Cat and quickly becomes her personal driver, consultant and friend as they race through the streets of New York solving cases and trying to uncover the mystery behind her father’s murder.
The preview for the show isn’t much better. It feels like a high school production of a network procedural.
