Ricky Gervais to David Letterman 'You Can't Retire' (Video)

Ricky Gervais appeared on The Late Show on Tuesday and he could leave the show before addressing David Letterman’s impending retirement from the late night world.

Rather than taking the road most traveled and going with the typical pleas of celebrity guests begging Letterman to stay, Gervais decided to reason with Letterman on a practical level:

“You think you’re going to spend more time with your family. But they have a routine. You’ll be in the way. You’re going to spend a lot of time in a shed pretending to do stuff. You’re going to be sitting around listening to people talk and saying, ‘I’m not getting paid a thing for this!’

You can get out of stuff cause you’re working. When someone says, a relative, ‘Oh come over [for] a barbecue,’ you can’t say ‘I can’t I’m in a shed.’ So you’re gonna have to go.”

With Letterman’s 2015 retirement slowly approaching, Gervais continued his plea to Letterman asking the late night host to consider what will happen to the show’s band leader Paul Shaffer when Letterman exits the show:

“What’s [Paul] going to do?. You’re going to have to take him home with you, like kids do with a school hamster for the weekend.”
