Emeraude Toubia comments on Isabelle’s journey in Season 2B of Freeform’s ‘Shadowhunters,’ teases new relationship moments, and tells us her nickname for Paul Wesley!

Emeraude Toubia, who plays Isabelle Lightwood on Shadowhunters sat down with us to tease where Izzy is headed in the summer premiere. She couldn’t give away too much about what’s in store for her character, but she did confirm that Isabelle will be back to her “badass” demon-hunting self in the near future.

At the end of Season 2A, Isabelle told Raphael that their relationship was over, but Toubia hinted that the two characters will continue to have scenes together this summer. “Isabelle and Raphael have a lot going on, so they’re not done,” she said. “There’s still a lot more that they need to talk about, that they need to deal with, and you’re going to see that throughout the second part of the season of Shadowhunters.”

She added that she’s interested herself to watch the drama unfold on-screen between Raphael and Isabelle. “It’s going to be really amazing; it’s going to be a little heartbreaking, but I’m excited to see what the fans are going to react to this whole situation between them,” she said. “We know that he’s asexual, that he’s not sexually interested in doing anything with her. Is that something that Isabelle can deal with? Can she deal with him betraying her? Can she get over the yin fen addiction? So that’s something that we’re going to see her going through in the season.”

Isabelle will “maybe get some help from Simon and some help from someone else, and I can’t really say who…”

When Isabelle helped rescue Alec and Aldertree on the roof of the Institute in Episode 10, we saw her throw some shade at Aldertree, but Toubia says that Izzy has moved on from wanting to confront Aldertree about her addiction. “Isabelle is I think over Aldertree right now, and I think she’s just going to be focused on herself and is going to be focused on Raphael and her brother, and I think that’s the path that she’s going to go through.” She then teased that Isabelle will be forming stronger relationships with other characters. “Maybe get some help from Simon and some help from someone else, that I can’t really say who, but yeah.”

Could Sizzy be endgame in Season 2B? We hope so!

  • We’ve heard from other cast members and have seen in released trailers that Izzy is in some trouble (and in danger?) at the start of Season 2B, but rest assured, Toubia said that “Isabelle is slowly gonna get her strength back and slowly it’s gonna develop, and she eventually gets to be badass again.”

We also learned that Izzy is one of the first characters to form a relationship with Sebastian, played by newcomer Will Tudor. “Isabelle and Sebastian do meet early on. Just like he has a relationship with every character, he does have a very close relationship with Isabelle,” she said. “It’s going to be very interesting and exciting. It’s different. It’s not what’s written in the books… it’s going to lead down the same path, but in a different way.”

The Vampire Diaries‘ Paul Wesley directed Episode 16 this year, and we learned on set that Toubia had been very excited to work with Wesley on the series. She even told us that she has a nickname for him. “Well, you know sometimes I call him Paul Weasley,” she said. “But Paul Wesley, he’s awesome. You know, I’m such a big fan of his. I love his show. I love him. He was working on a show for 8 years, so we have a lot to learn from him and he brings great energy and he’s an amazing director.”

When asked what she was most looking forward to seeing on-screen this season, Toubia said, “Episode 2011. The first episode we’re going to see in the summer premiere of Shadowhunters.” She went on to reveal why she’s proud of the episode and what it means for Isabelle Lightwood. “That was the hardest episode by far I’ve ever had to shoot,” she said. “Isabelle’s going to hit rock bottom. It’s an episode that I’m excited for everyone to see and I hope it gets to be on my reel.”

Thanks to a video clip released today by Freeform, we have a better idea of what Toubia may teasing. From what we gather in the new video from “Mea Maxima Culpa,” Isabelle will be captured by the Greater Demon, Azazel. Check out the clip from the premiere below:
