Usually, I equate horror films to “mass-produced cream-filled pastries.” But every once in awhile one will come along that tastes just right. Australian filmmaker Sean Byrne’s debut, The Loved Ones, is one of those rare films. Sure, you’ll spend half the film gritting your teeth, but you’ll also laugh your ass off and get totally tied up (you’ll get it when you see it) in the story. If Brick was The Breakfast Club meets Chinatown, then The Loved Ones is Sixteen Candles meets The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This is the best foreign horror flick since Let the Right One In.
