With Will Smith apparently not involved in the production of Independence Day 2, fans all over are wondering who else will and won’t be in the upcoming sequel that is set to hit theaters in 2015.
Movies.com appeared at a Q&A with Roland Emmerich to promote his film White House Down at the Apple Store in SoHo, Manhattan. He had a 40 minute conversation about Independence Day and reported that half the cast will consist of returning characters, while the other half will consist of new characters.
He has confirmed that Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum had interests in coming back to the franchise.
I will admit, as much as none of these characters deserve Oscars for their performances, the actors bring a solid job to this B-movie.
Bill Pullman was an iconic trustworthy old school American of the 1990s, in such hits such as Sleepless in Seattle. While the role was neither complex nor took risks, he did a great job portraying a leader that suffered through loss, yet overcame it and felt comfortable being part of the special effects sequences of the film.
Jeff Goldblum is no rookie to sci fi either, having played a major protagonist in both David Cronenberg’s remake of the Fly and Steven Spielberg’s ensemble blockbuster success, the first two Jurassic Park films.
Also Emmerich he deems Will Smith as too expensive to bring back for the film, he did not deny wanting to put him in a cameo passing-of-the-torch sequence. Even though, who needs him when you got the hacker that took down the alien mothership and the Commander-in-Chief that went to take down the mothership himself without the help of Secret Service members. Mano-a-mano.
