1. Creator Matthew Weiner wrote the first episode seven years before the show would air

In the 1990’s, Matthew Weiner was a writer on network sitcoms like Becker and The Naked Truth. However, he had an idea about a drama centered on a Madison Avenue advertising firm set in the 1960’s. In 2000, Weiner wrote what would be the first episode of the series, “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes.” Known as a “spec script,” the pilot episode would be shopped around to potential networks.

At the time, the title of the show was called The Division. Prior to writing the episode, Weiner studied literary books such as The Feminine Mystique (1963) and Sex and the Single Girl (1962) while viewing such films as The Apartment (1960) and A Guide for the Married Man (1967) to get a better understanding of the time period. The episode would eventually air as the series premiere on July 19, 2007 on AMC.
