No. 24 – “You’re fired.” – Donald Trump, The Apprentice
Another phrase popularized by a game show, this one has deep roots in real life. “You’re fired” was certainly not a novel phrase by any means, and Donald Trump took advantage of the existing feelings of dread and horror when faced with those two little words.
Capitalizing on the great tradition of schadenfreude, the reality game show turned the phrase on its head. America found that from the vantage point of a comfy couch it was actually fun to watch others get ousted from their jobs. Honestly, who wanted to work for that thinning comb over megalomaniac nightmare anyway? Answer: No one.
