Denis Villeneuve has had a little to say the past few days about a project that he is really passionate about: Blade Runner 2. He is beginning to figure out how the sequel will tie into the original, and how to make the sequela viable continuation of the story. Villeneuve is a fan of the first Blade Runner film, and has hope that fans will understand that he will not make a film that they will not like.
Villeneuve goes on to say that the sequel to the cult-classic Blade Runner, will look to answer a decades old mystery. Talking to Crave Online about his film, Sicario, at the Toronto Film Festival, Villeneuve suggested that the film will aim to answer the old question of whether Harrison Ford’s character, Rick Deckard, is a human or a replicant. This is a mystery that every edition and cut of the film has failed to answer.
This is a question that Ridley Scott answered in 1997, by saying that Rick Deckard is a replicant:
“Yes, he’s a replicant. He was always a replicant.”
Harrison Ford begs to differ. He thinks that Rick Deckard is a human, not a replicant as Scott believes. Now it will be Denis Villeneuve’s turn to finally lay to rest this age-old mystery. He tells Crave Online:
“Now that I am on the other side of the fence I cannot answer… The thing I must say is that I love mystery. I love shadows. I love doubts. I would just want to say to the fans that we will take care of that mystery. I will take care of it.”
The sequel will see Ford reprising his role as Rick Deckard, and Ridley Scott is already slated to produce the film. Denis Villeneuve will direct the sequel. There is no date set for the film.
