Disney is not just stopping with The Jungle Book. They have brought the Into the Woods team back together to make a sequel to their timeless classic, Mary Poppins. I don’t know how to react to this news, honestly. Mary Poppins is one of my favorite childhood movies, and I wouldn’t mind seeing a reboot. What bothers me is that they are actually trying to make a sequel.
Rob Marshall will direct the sequel with Marc Platt and John DeLuca set to produce the film. Sources say that the sequel will be set in London twenty years after the first film. Does this mean that the sequel is set during post WWI, the 1980s, or in current times? Who really knows. The story will follow the continued adventures of Miss Poppins and the Banks family, taken directly from other storylines in P.L. Travers’ books.
It appears that Anne Hathaway is the fan-favorite to play the role of Mary Poppins, being cited on many sites as the front-runner for the role. The original film starred Julie Andrews, as Mary Poppins, and Dick Van Dyke. With Disney’s recent success bring their old animated properties to life, it seems that all of their classic live-action films will be getting the same treatment.
