Season 12, Episode 1: ‘Sledgehammer’
Doctor’s Notes: Premiere episodes of Grey’s are either really fast paced or really slow. Coming off of last year’s extremely dark season that culminated in the loss of a main character and then the breakdown of Meredith herself. The premiere does what it can to avoid upsetting us that only gets so far because all you have to do is see Meredith wearing Derek’s surgical cap and the tears will start. Mostly this episode establishes the relationships that are still getting off to a sort of rocky start. The important parts revolve around Meredith and her housemates, who are also her sisters. Because that needed to be complicated. Meredith and Amelia spend the time complaining about each others’ eccentricities and habits to Maggie. They’re driving the other nuts doing terrible things like helping out by doing laundry and then putting away. It’s kind of ridiculous and they both seem to just be looking for a reason to resent each other. And Maggie is a good sport about it but also knows when to stand up for herself. She’s actually the perfect referee because she wants harmony and knows both sides, and in the end, she helps everyone see reason stop acting like children.
