‘Pretty Little Liars’ Season 7 Character 411: Hanna Marin

Freeform’s ‘Pretty Little Liars’ is getting ready to return for their seventh (and likely final) season so now is the perfect time to refresh your memory on PLL’s central characters.

In this character 411, Hidden Remote explores the ins and outs of Pretty Little Liars’ bubbly fashionista Hanna Marin (Ashley Benson)…

Freeform: Pretty Little Liars

Quick Rundown: As the most candid Liar, Hanna holds a firm reputation as the group’s comically, off the cuff member. Not without her fair share of adversity, Hanna has faced uphill battles on the home front, having been emotionally and physically abandoned by an aloof father and ridiculed for her weight by Ali (Sasha Pieterse). Predominantly raised by her caring mother Ashley (Laura Leighton), Hanna has managed to rise above her personal upheaval to find happiness and contentment, despite A’s numerous attempts to rip it away.

As the group’s comedic relief, Hanna often reduces the tension of their latest drama by making a well-timed joke to soothe their stress.

Fun Facts: Hanna is the only Liar to share a friendship with an outsider to the core group. Mona (Janel Parrish) once told Hanna (in all sincerity) that she is smarter than Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and the show hinted she was right when Hanna’s lofty SAT score landed her with more college offers than Spencer. It was revealed that Hanna once kissed Aria’s brother Mike. Cue the awkwardness among friends.

Romantic Status: Engaged to apparent nice guy Jordan (David Coussins) but flirting with ex-boyfriend, Caleb (Tyler Blackburn).

Relationship Status with Each Liar

Alison – Bullied by Ali; Hanna has been the Liar who’s suffered the most at her hands. Eventually forging her own identity in the wake of Ali’s disappearance; the Hanna, Ali returned to was far more confident and less easily influenced by her quasi-friend. Hanna’s growing disdain for her frenemy has put her at odds with unwavering Ali-sympathizer, Spencer.

Aria – Aria (Lucy Hale) and Hanna are very close, though Hanna’s friendship with Mona, who Aria resents dating her brother, has put them at timid odds.

Emily – Of all the Liars, Hanna is probably closest to Emily (Shay Mitchell). Let’s face it, who has a bad relationship with Emily? She is the purest hearted member of the group.

Spencer – As the sun set on season 6, it similarly dimmed on Hanna’s friendship with Spencer. Spurred to take control of the spiraling ‘Emoji A’ situation, Hanna staged a coup of sorts, devising a plan of action with her ex and Spencer’s current boyfriend, Caleb, without Spencer’s input. To worsen matters Hanna made romantic overtures towards Caleb, in front of Spencer. With the girl code having been broken by Spencer, the rivalry between these two has hit critical mass and neither were doing themselves any favors with their handling of the aftermath.

Distinction: Hanna’s propensity to share whatever thought enters her mind comprises a candor not quite found amidst her fellow Liars. Hanna speaks from her heart and wears it on her sleeve.

Worst Crime: Standing by as the firecracker that blinded Jenna (Tammin Sursok) went off.

Greatest Rival: Alison DiLaurentis

Hanna is not a particularly competitive or resentful person which makes her rivalry with Alison, all the more glaring. After undergoing a regrettable Goth makeover to physically differentiate herself from her sometimes-foe, the 5-years later version of Hanna has seemed more comfortable in her own skin. The scars of Ali’s bullying will never fade and even though they ignore it, the damage is evident. Like any complex rivalry, Hanna has oftentimes, expressed conflict regarding her feelings towards Ali. As DiLaurentis’ signature spell has shown the ability to enchant even her most ardent victims.

Season 7 Theory: Hanna was last seen unconscious, whilst being dragged away by an unidentified assailant, presumably Emoji A. As of season 6B, her whereabouts are unknown and she has not appeared in any of the season 7 promo material. Fear not! There is no way Hanna will be gone for long. She has an engagement to end with Jordan, a reunion to share with Caleb and a score to settle with her latest blackmailer.

Best Scene: How do you choose when there are so many? There were the sad scenes of Hanna’s horrible father refusing to pay for her college education (Season 5, Episode 15 “Out Damned Spot”) and A forcing her to binge eat cupcakes (Season 1, Episode 13 “Know Your Frenemies”). Last season’s spunky scene of Hanna triumphantly telling off her nightmare boss (Season 6, Episode 15 “Do Not Disturb”) and her touching scene opposite Mona in the Christmas special, where she remembers her dearly “departed” friend (Season 5 Episode 13 “How the ‘A’ Stole Christmas”).
