Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time adds Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Chris Pine to the upcoming project directed by Ava DuVernay.
Disney’s adaptation of A Wrinkle In Time has been getting constant news since its announcement—back in February, it was confirmed that Ava DuVernay would take on the multimillion dollar project, making her the first African American woman to direct a film with a budget of over $100 million.
Since then, we’ve been getting update after update regarding casting news and now two more actors have been added to the star-studded cast.
DuVernay confirmed on Twitter that Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Chris Pine will be playing main character Meg Murry’s parents. Mbatha-Raw will play a microbiologist while Pine is a government physicist that goes missing. His disappearance is the reason why Meg goes on a time traveling adventure with her brother and friend.
We still haven’t gotten news regarding who will play Meg’s two companions, but the studio is reportedly looking for nonwhite actors to play her friend. Meg will be played by newcomer Storm Reid, who made her feature debut in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave.
Along with Reid, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling and Oprah Winfrey have already been confirmed for the roles of Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which. Frozen’s Jennifer Lee will write the script and like DuVernay, she also made history when she became the first female filmmaker to direct a film with a box office gross of over $1 billion.
A Wrinkle In Time already has the makings of a great movie so this news only adds to the excitement. Filming is expected to start in Los Angeles at the end of the year. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on the latest casting news and when an official release date is announced.
