Hodor – Game of Thrones
Last Words: “Ho-d-or!”
How He Died: Holding the door.
Why His Last Words Are So Good: Where do we start here? Throughout the history of Game of Thrones, Hodor (Kristian Nairn) and his single-word aphasia had always been something of a mystery. However, in a single scene, we find out that Hodor’s malady occurred as a direct and horrifying result of his death, making his single word epitaph all the more poignant and shocking.
Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) plays things a bit too loose with his training under the Three Eyed Raven, and basically invites the Night’s King and a whole army of wights directly to him. Meera (Ellie Kendrick) and Hodor flee with a warging Bran in tow, and the wights follow. As the trio escapes, Meera orders Hodor to “hold the door” against the wights, but the echoes of her command reach Bran in his vision of the past. Bran looks at lil Hodor and inadvertently gives him some sort of time travel seizure, trapping Hodor in the terror-filled moment of his death for eternity.
When we finally saw Hodor hold that door, pieces clicked into place and there wasn’t anything more fitting that he could have said at the very end. In fact, he was telling us the whole time.
