Maude Flanders – The Simpsons

Last Words: “I know; they make you uncomfortable.”

How She Died: She was knocked over the side of grandstand by t-shirts from t-shirt cannon guns.

Why Her Last Words Were So Great: Maude Flanders was referring to foot-long hot dogs when she told her husband “I know, they make you uncomfortable.” Apparently, Ned Flanders didn’t enjoy the long, tube-shaped food and would rather not have them around, seemingly so they wouldn’t be compared to, uh, anything else. Good old Maude always looking out for her man.

The Simpsons shocked its viewers by killing Maude. Even though Fox executives were in a dispute with the woman who voiced Maude Flanders, The Simpsons generally didn’t take on such a heavy topic. Of course the writers found some levity with it but Ned Flanders was left grieving and questioning his faith in God afterward. There were definitely sad and hefty moments for the cartoon.

While Maude’s last words weren’t profound – giving great advice or declaring her love for her family – they were certainly memorable. Even until the very end, she looked after her husband’s fragile psyche thinking about his hot dog.
