Abuse victims who hail from narcissistic homes almost always build their own support system and their own families. Narcissistic families are not really families, sure there’s usually a blood bond but the entire system is selfish and destructive to the children growing up in such an environment. This is something How to Get Away With Murder‘s Michaela Pratt (Aja Naomi King) had to deal with growing up. She was adopted by a lower class white woman in Louisiana, what some would consider white trash. Michaela knows very well that her mother only adopted her for the money; motivation to serve for her mother’s own self needs.

It’s not surprising that in this latest episode Michaela tries her hardest to mend the broken bonds between Asher (Matt McGorry) and Connor (Jack Falahee) as both men throw accusations in every direction they can think of. It’s not surprising when she runs out of patience when it comes to handling her role as Keating Five’s mother, she never really learned how to empathize with the people around her because of how she was raised. So when it comes to including Annalise (Viola Davis) in her family, Michaela refuses to accept that she’s hurting and wounded. As far as Michaela is concerned, Annalise made her own bed and now she can sleep in it.

Trust us, Annalise is trying her hardest to keep Michaela’s family from crumbling as well. She knows how important those surviving four are to the Queen of the group and offers counseling and compassion. Michaela still may consider A.K as a mother figure (cause let’s face it, Annalise is ten times the better mother than Trishelle (Brett Butler) could ever be). She very nearly uses again this episode but stops short and calls President Hargrove (Lauren Luna Vélez) as her sponsor, but A.K isn’t an idiot for she quickly pieces together the evidence that Hargrove is acting on behalf of Atwood (Milauna Jackson). Then their world is further wrecked when they all find out Wes’ body was cremated, which is suspect for both Atwood and Annalise.

While Connor is struggling to deal with his grief of finding Wes dead prior to the house fire, he’s also keeping it a secret and acting out in anger. He’s blaming Annalise in desperation to deal with his grief and this episode Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) finds out what Connor had desperately been trying to hide.

Laurel (Karla Souza) is also dealing with her own findings, the Mahoney’s know that Wes is related to them as she had hired a private investigator. Michaela is probably kicking herself for not being more present with Laurel after the death of her boyfriend and allowing Laurel to possibly put herself in danger.

Even Frank (Charlie Weber) is a member of Michaela’s adoptive family, even if he doesn’t know it. She possibly sees him as an older brother or male role model. He’s successful and self-made despite his criminal background (and present). But he’s also clever, to which Michaela admires hugely, as Frank proved in the penultimate episode of How to Get Away With Murder when he secured a subpoena for Atwood’s phone records the day of Wes’ murder.

Will the group believe Connor with his story? Will the subpoena find anything interesting on Atwood? Will the Michaela’s new family that she’s created continue to crumble around her? Tune in next week on ABC at 10/9c Thursday for the next installment of How to Get Away with Murder!
