Will Tudor reveals how Sebastian “infiltrates” the NY Institute on ‘Shadowhunters’

Will Tudor teases Sebastian’s role at the NY Institute and explains what he thinks fans will love the most about the newest Shadowhunter in town.

Sebastian Verlac is the most anticipated new character on Freeform’s hit fantasy series Shadowhunters, and though almost all of the details surrounding Sebastian’s role on the series have been kept tightly under wraps, we sat down with Will Tudor on set to try and learn more about Sebastian in Season 2B.

“You’ll see him really infiltrate his way into the Institute because he’s got this knowledge.”

As fans have seen from the teaser trailer released by Freeform, Sebastian jumps into the action early on in the season, and Tudor was able to reveal a bit more about what happens in the scene. “When we first meet him, he is this kind of this swashbuckling hero who comes in and saves the day,” Tudor said. “He and Izzy have sort of a meeting… he’s a bit of a hero in that situation. She has a bit of trouble and he’s very sort of conscientious, very thoughtful.” Tudor also explained more about why Sebastian is able to gain the trust of other Shadowhunters so quickly. “He’s very knowledgable about Greater Demons,” Tudor said. “He specialized in that, so you’ll see him really infiltrate his way into the Institute because he’s got this knowledge, which is very very useful.”

More from Interviews

Some fans believe that we may have already “met” Sebastian at the end of Episode 10 when a hooded figure took the Soul-Sword from the Institute, but Tudor confirmed that he couldn’t possibly know anything about who took the Sword or where it may be. “Obviously it’s not great that the Soul-Sword is out there in an unknown person’s hands, but I’m excited to find out who that is,” he said. “Whoever it is, I know they play a big part in the series, and I’m very excited for the people to find out what that might be.”

Fans of Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments series already have an understanding of who Sebastian is, but that doesn’t mean the television series won’t have its share of surprises and twists. Tudor commented on what he loves most about playing a character who is so complex and unpredictable. “It’s so rare that you get to do someone with so many layers and kind of play around with quite a sort of amorphous character actually, without giving too much away,” he shared. “Not necessarily everything is as it seems, and it’s all really exciting. I think what’s great with this kind of show is you get to do a lot of stuff, and things can change sort of on a dime, very very quickly, and as an actor that’s just great to play.”

After learning that Sebastian specialized in Greater Demons, we were curious to know if he will also have a favorite weapon of choice or a particular skill set, but Tudor wasn’t able to tease much, saying, “Oh, knife and fork, definitely. He loves that steak.” And while Tudor said that he wasn’t a target for any pranks while filming, he was a bit of a comedian when talking about if he’d been scared or tricked on set. “I’ll tell you the scariest thing is me before I go into hair and make-up in the morning,” he joked. “So that’s pretty terrifying…”

“He is everything to anyone who he wants that to be.”

So what will fans love the most about Sebastian Verlac? Will Tudor’s answer was just as mysterious as the character he’ll play this season. “I think they’re going to love that they don’t know where they are with him, and I think they’re going to love that he is everything to anyone who he wants that to be,” he said. “Does that make sense? I think it vaguely makes sense, which is probably a good answer then.”
