What music was heard in The Americans season 5 finale? That would be “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” one of the biggest hits for iconic pop singer-songwriter Elton John.

“Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” plays in “The Soviet Division” during the montage, in which the various members of the Jennings family reflect on their lives, whether it’s Paige (Holly Taylor) walking through the parking lot where she and her mother were attacked or Elizabeth (Keri Russell) looking around her family’s kitchen to realize she won’t have it anymore when they go back to Russia.

The song was released in 1973 as the second single from Elton John’s album of the same name, meaning it actually well predates The Americans, which takes place in the 1980’s. With music by Elton John and lyrics by his longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” reached number two on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart and was also a number one hit in Canada. It also appears on John’s Greatest Hits album.

The song has been covered by country artist Hunter Hayes, rock band Keane and pop songstress Sara Bareilles. It’s also a regular part of John’s live performances, including his recently concluded residency in Las Vegas, The Million Dollar Piano. Check out when he performed the single as a duet with the equally legendary Billy Joel several years ago:
