Mandy Moore, This Is Us’ beloved matriarch and songbird Rebecca Pearson, gave a surprise performance at an Emmys event this week.

NBC is in full-promotion mode for the Emmys and that included a This Is Us For Your Consideration event in L.A. this week. In addition to insightful panels — we’ll soon find out how Jack dies, thank God — the guests (and voters) were treated to a surprise performance from Mandy Moore.

Moore plays Rebecca on the show, the matriarch of the Pearson family, and every so often, fans are treated to her singing as we follow her efforts to get a music career back on track as the mother of teenagers in the 90s timeline. It’s no surprise then that NBC chose to show off Moore, who was a pop star long before she was an actress, during the FYC event.

Check out the video of Mandy Moore singing at the This Is Us event below.

Throughout the first season, This Is Us weaved music throughout the show’s storylines, both with Rebecca and Kate as well as William and (disastrously) Randall.  This Is Us uses also uses music as not only plot, but also a way to communicate tone and time — there’s even a soundtrack for the first season.  At the FYC Emmy event, the audience was treated to a rendition of the show’s original song “We Can Always Come Back to This” from the “Memphis” episode as well.  Guest star Brian Tyree Henry, who played William’s cousin in the episode, stopped by to perform the song.

Music is shaping up to be a big part of the second season too. Kate has expressed interest in following in her mother’s footsteps, or rather, not waiting any longer to pursue her dream. (Both Chrissy Metz, the actress who plays Kate, and Moore have expressed interest in doing mother-daughter duets too.)
