Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi Goldberg already has a Tony, Grammy, Oscar and Emmy, but now she’s also a Disney Legend, making her the first person to ever be a DEGOT! She has brought characters to life in animation and has stared in famous roles on in film and television. When she walked up on the Disney Legends stage, she first showed off her Minnie Mouse shoes, which were decorated with characters and polka dots! She explained that her mother always wanted to take her to Disney World, but instead, it was Whoopi who got to bring her mother to the park. “My connection here has always meant the world to me,” she said. “Thank you for letting me be a legend.”

Julie Taymor

Julie Taymor is famous for her unparalleled ability to tell stories through puppetry and mask work. She brought life to Broadway’s The Lion King, becoming the first women to win a TONY for directing a musical. Taymor spoke on why the experience of The Lion King has been so powerful. “It’s been a privilege as an artist, to be able to take this beautiful, stunning story from an animated film,” she said. She went on to share stories about how the show has helped families and communities heal and learn to feel unified, which she finds to be heartwarming and inspirational.

As a surprise for Julie Taymor, and the entire Disney Legends audience in Hall D23, the cast of    the current The Lion King production then took the stage to sing “He Lives In You.”
