Let’s read into what a ‘Big Three Homes’ trucker hat means.

When This Is Us started shooting in season 2 in early July, Mandy Moore let slip a potential spoiler on her Instagram story. Somehow, we missed this exciting nugget of news, but luckily, screenshots and the internet are forever. Which brings us to the matter at hand (in hat?): Does this hat mean Jack achieves his construction dreams?

Let’s back up. The photo Moore shared on Instagram — preserved in perpetuity by Entertainment Tonight — shows a trucker hat (yikes) with the words “Big Three Homes” and “Pittsburgh, PA” on it. Does the logo and name mean Jack finally starts that construction company? Does the trucker hat mean he somehow survives to the 00s?

As you may or may not recall, but you should absolutely recall, in season 1 episode 6, Jack is faced with choosing between his own career dreams (to open a construction company called Big Three Homes) and investing in Randall’s academic future (by sending him to a private school). Of course, he chooses sending Randall to private school.

This episode not only provides a Top 10 Jack Dad moment in which he asks Randall to do math and then tells him he wants him to be as different as he can possibly be, but also the excellent image of Jack and young Randall tying their ties together.

Anyways. At the end of season 1, and by our best estimation, in the 90s timeline at all, Jack is still working his desk job and Big Three Homes is still a pipe dream. But what of the hat? It seems mildly implausible that Jack would have enough time to get his company started before dying, but perhaps there’s more 90s story left than we think. Maybe it’s the first thing he does after moving out of the family’s house.

We also don’t know exactly what Miguel is up to career-wise in the present, though presumably he’s retired. If we’re really doing a deep-read on the trucker hat style, it’s possible that Miguel later started his own construction company then named and dedicated to his best friend. Or, they could have gone into business together and perhaps his death is construction-related.

Or, it could just be a gift from a fan to Mandy Moore that we’re reading far too much into. Really, we have no idea.
