‘The Last Tycoon’ premiered this weekend, and as a binge-watcher, I’m already three-quarters of the way through ten hour-long episodes. But before we get to a recap or a review, let’s talk about the stars who are running this world of Hollywood in the 1930s. Even though we’ll have a full recap for you later this week, we thought we’d get you associated with the plot and actors you might need to know.

Plot

The Last Tycoon circles around a movie studio named Brady-American studios, who is fighting bankruptcy during pre-World War II times. After Minna Davis, wife of Monroe Stahr, died in a tragic fire, Stahr was left alone. In the pilot, Celia Brady has the idea to start a movie called An Enemy Among Us, which is about a dystopian world, which was actually World War II Germany fighting to take hold of the world. Since Germany is starting to control Hollywood pictures, the 10 episode show also focuses on the issues of trying to make movies in a dried up environment while trying to make movies for the only place that has money: Germany, without offending the Fuherer.

Actors

Matt Bomer

At the front of it all is Matt Bomer, playing Monroe Stahr, Hollywood’s Golden Boy. Many people don’t need a reminder of who Bomer is, as he’s been in television and movies that have caught attention. His best-known role would be Neal Caffrey in White Collar, where he played a con man turned good and working for the FBI. The show ran for six seasons and is my favorite role of Bomer’s. The way he played a suave con man one minute and a completely turned-good man of the law the next always seemed to the character, and the actor, on his toes.

Lily Collins

For me, this was the first role I saw Lily Collins in since the first episode of The Last Tycoon came out months ago as Celia Brady. However, I recently saw her in the Netflix movie To The Bone, where she played a woman with anorexia, trying to deal with being treated, and the difficulties that come with that. With how Netflix handled 13 Reasons Why, I was worried about this movie. But there was a different feel to this movie. Less soap opera and teenage drama, and more about the actual issue of anorexia, and what it can do to your body.

Lily Collins shines in the role given to her and having it be the complete opposite of The Last Tycoon, it just goes to show her acting abilities and how versatile she is.

Kelsey Grammer

Kelsey Grammar is definitely a name heard somewhere if you hear it. He’s one of the actors that has been in everything. In the Last Tycoon, he’s the father of Celia and movie producer, Pat Brady. Grammer was in the widely known show Cheers and Frazier, where he played the starring role. While the other two main roles have actors who are hitting their prime now, Grammer has been in the show business for a long time.

Other people in notable roles:

Dominque McElligot – Hannah Conway in House of Cards, plays Monroe’s love interest Kathleen Moore, an Irish girl from Rathgar.

Saul Rubinek – Warehouse 13. Saul plays Louis B. Mayer, the owner of the studio (MGM) that they are borrowing money for after Brady-American’s money ran out. Fact: he was born in a refugee camp in Germany, fitting the timeline of the show.

Rosemarie DeWitt – Laura in La La Land. Rose plays a definitely surprising characters, but spoilers! We can’t share anymore!

Next: Amazon to release the Last Tycoon on July 28
