This Is Us may have lost the battle with Shameless but they had some serious NFL support.

As you may or may not have heard, over the past week, This Is Us was engaged in a heated battle to win placement on the cover of Entertainment Weekly in the magazine’s fall cover battle. The beloved NBC drama faced Shameless in its bracket and there was much light, good-hearted joking and roasting on Twitter between stars of the show before This Is Us tragically lost to its competition.

After William H. Macy recorded a clip claiming that the This Is Us pilot was written by Putin (“who’s it gonna be — Moscow, or Chicago?”) and the Shameless Twitter account asserted only one family can be the best, the This Is Us account responded in kind. Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore recorded a clip of their own, emphasizing the show’s setting in Pittsburgh and Dan Fogelman’s role in writing the pilot. It was at this point that Noted This Is Us Fans and professional football team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, got involved.

The Steelers hopped into the convo to vouch for the Pearson couple and their American bonafides.

When a senior editor at EW quote-tweeted the engagement, asking what team they’re on, the Steelers shared another photo from the show, featuring the characters in Steelers gear in a Steelers bar.

At this point, Ventimiglia weighed in, throwing his lot in with #SteelersNation and a fan added an old photo of Moore and Ventimiglia with their custom Pearson Steelers jerseys.

As for those Putin accusations, Dan Fogelman responded to the charges, claiming Putin’s involvement was only as a proofreader, before Ken Olin joined in to say that William H. Macy is, in fact, Russian.

Not one to be left out of the This Is Us love fest / active defense, Sterling K. Brown also responded to the Shameless tweet, with such choice hashtags as #IKnowYourWife and #ShamelessIndeed.

Tragically, it was not enough and the Showtime show eked out a victory over what is clearly the better, more American show. But no matter: We have no doubt the Pearsons will be on the cover on their own merit soon enough.
