On the set of ‘This Is Us,’ Sterling K. Brown and Susan Kelechi Watson posed for a selfie during a night shoot, and it got us predicting Beth and Randall’s Season 2 future.

More from This Is Us

The cast and crew of This Is Us are nothing if not generous. Since kicking off filming on Season 2 earlier this summer, behind the scenes photos have been rolling out across all social platforms. Whether it’s teases from the creator and Sterling K. Brown or watching Mandy Moore transform into present day Rebecca, fans have been graciously invited onto the set to make the waiting time until September pass that much more quickly.

Sterling K. Brown, who of course plays the incomparable Randall Pearson on This Is Us, posted the latest behind the scenes snap on Instagram. Brown posed alongside his TV better half Susan Kelechi Watson, who plays the equally incomparable Beth Pearson, during a night shoot for what will surely be the next episode to makes us cry uncontrollably. But the on-set photo didn’t simply ramp up our excitement for the sophomore season. Seeing Beth and Randall Pearson in action inspired a few hopes for what’s to come for the This Is Us OTP in the new season. Will there be another little Pearson? Some growing pains? Perhaps a flashback? Let’s get predicting!

1. Growing pains.

After William’s passing and Randall’s hasty career moves, Season 2 will definitely involve quite a bit of growing pains for Beth and Randall. How have they healed with William gone? What direction will Randall take for his life and career? Do either of these changes have an effect on their marriage, whether positive or negative? Finding a new normal will be a major part of their story, but there’s nothing these two can’t handle together.

2. Another little Pearson.

In the Season 1 finale, Randall approaches Beth and tells her that he wants to adopt a child. Randall’s journey in the first set of episodes — meeting his birth father, coming to terms with his adoptive mother’s lie, et al. — brings him to the desire to share the same experience (without the fibs, though). From their pregnancy scare in “The Game Plan,” we know that Beth and Randall have welcomed the idea of having another child. Just imagine seeing Sterling K. Brown with a baby… Will they take the leap in Season 2?

3. More, more, more.

Justin Hartley recently commented that the second season of This Is Us will be a “deeper” affair than its first, and that’s good news all around. Having a solid base knowledge of who this family is, now we can peel back more of their layers and get into the messier bits of their lives. It’s not too much to ask for more Beth and Randall as a whole, especially Beth. We know Beth, but it would be wonderful to explore her complexities as a black woman who’s a working mother. More Beth, more Randall, more Pearson!

4. A flashback of their own.

Much of the success of This Is Us lies in its flawless ability to tell a self-contained story along an expansive timeline. We have gone as far back in time as William as a baby, and we’re living life in real time with the Big Three. And while the flashbacks have been mostly focused on Jack and Rebecca, wouldn’t going back to how Beth and Randall met add to the deepening of Season 2? It’s a safe bet that we’ll soon get to know our Big Three as well as their parents.
