While the poster for ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ did give us our first look at Captain America’s new suit, post-Civil War, it’s difficult to tell if the new suit is a version of the Nomad costume, or The Captain.

To be clear, it’s been some time since the poster for Avengers: Infinity War was released. It was unveiled by Marvel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, driving fans crazy the moment it dropped. The poster had fans going wild for many reasons, but the most pertinent being the character reveals.
War Machine and Bucky Barnes back in action were probably the most surprising, but Captain America’s appearance on the corner of the poster definitely got more people interested in the suit Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is going to be wearing, now that he’s no longer going by the Captain America alias. Check out the poster below.

As you can see, Steve Rogers/Captain America is situated in the bottom left corner of the poster from the waist up. From what we can tell, the suit he’s wearing doesn’t look much different from his Civil War suit. The suit still has the star in the middle of the chest, and the red highlights on the torso area of his suit are still intact, so there aren’t too many noticeable differences. However, the blacked out portion of Cap’s new suit gives it the appearance of one of Cap’s notable costumes from the comics, the The Captain outfit.
In the comics, Steve Rogers took on the moniker of The Captain after he was forced to resign from his position as Captain America. Having never been relieved of his military service during WWII, Rogers was still considered an active member of the U.S. military forces. As a result, Rogers passed on the mantle of Captain America to John Walker while he became the Captain, donning an adamantium shield, instead of his iconic, vibranium shield.
The Captain suit is important to acknowledge here because its appearance is quite similar to Steve Rogers’ suit in Avengers: Infinity War. A Black top, with the stars and stripes still intact say it all, but some fans are insinuating Rogers’ new suit is an interpretation of the Nomad outfit.
Will Steve Rogers Become The Nomad, The Captain, Or Something In Between?
Now, that could be the direction Marvel is taking Steve Rogers, but with his new suit possessing more of the tones found in the Captain suit than the Nomad costume, it gives us a pretty good impression of Rogers taking on an alias kin to The Captain, rather than the Nomad. That said, if Rogers is in fact taking on a The Captain persona, what kind of shield will he carry?
At the moment, there’s no sign of adamantium existing in the MCU, and its relevance in X-Men stories likely have the concept stuck in development at Fox, meaning Adamantium probably can’t be used. So, Rogers is going to need a different kind of shield, and we may already know where he’s going to get it from.
If you recall the events of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Happy Hogan listed off the inventoried items aboard the plane Stark was having delivered to the Avengers new compound, one that included a tagline of “Cap’s new shield”.
Assuming the shield was created by Tony Stark, it’ll probably be a high-tech piece of equipment, similar to Phil Coulson’s retractable shield. We can’t say with certainty exactly what type of shield it will be, but there’s a good chance that Stark melted down Cap’s old shield and turned it into a completely different shield for him. If that’s the case, the new shield may just have a different appearance, despite being the same metal base.
All things said, Steve Rogers could be in for another costume change at some point during the events of Avengers: Infinity War. For all we know, the tease of Rogers’ new costume in the previously released poster might have been purposely placed there to misdirect fans from looking into the possibility of Rogers undergoing yet another costume change. The MCU has given Rogers a variety of suits in the past, so one more isn’t out of the realm of possibility. Either way, Rogers is getting a new suit, and I can’t wait to find out how it will play into the final arc of Steve Rogers’ journey in the MCU.
