In the latest ‘Rick and Morty:’ “Pickle Rick” is the most humorous episode of the season yet, but it paints a better picture of who Rick is.

This week’s Rick and Morty was one of the most highly anticipated. Since the trailer dropped in May, Pickle Rick has become a huge enigma. Everyone was wondering what episode it would be, what it would be about and how it would fit into the season. “Pickle Rick” answered all those questions and more.

If you haven’t watched “Pickle Rick”, there will be spoilers from this week’s Rick and Morty

The episode begins with Morty finding Rick as a pickle and it’s kind of confusing until we find out why. Morty, Summer and Beth are headed to family therapy and that’s of no interest to Rick so he finds a way out of it. The episode starts off funny with Rick finding his way around as a pickle, but eventually turns dark.

Most of it comes from the family therapy appointment between the other three. Dr. Wong makes an excellent point when she keeps questioning the family about Rick. He’s part of the reason why they’re so dysfunctional and Beth is the only one who doesn’t see it. She’s so scared of him leaving her again and she won’t stand up for herself. Even in the last moments of the episode, she learns nothing.

Then there’s Morty and Summer. The two don’t hold Rick up on a pedestal and know he only cares about himself. It’s a point he’s reiterated time and time again throughout the series, most notably this week when he shows up at the end of therapy. They can see how Rick is driving a wedge between their family including their parents’ divorce.

Then there’s Rick. He spends almost the entire episode as a pickle, only to get himself in more trouble than necessary. What really stood out to me was how quick he was to throw Beth to the wayside. When Jaguar was talking about his daughter and how much he loved her, Rick said he’d basically paid not to be around Beth.

It’s a sad truth about Rick and one the therapist pointed out. Rick knows how smart he is but it comes with a price. He sees himself as such an intelligent person but he can’t see himself beyond that. He doesn’t see himself as anything other than a genius and thus can’t be a good parent or grandparent.

The episode took a completely different turn than I was imagining. I thought it was going to be a hilarious, somewhat filler episode but it was so much more. “Pickle Rick” is only the 3rd episode of this season but it was worth the wait alone. Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon are stepping up their game this year.

Rick and Morty have continued to impress me thus far and was worth the almost 2-year wait. If next week’s episode is even half as good, it’s going to be an outstanding season. I haven’t even mentioned the new addition of the end-credit scenes to cap off each episode which is glorious.

It’s hard to imagine Rick and Morty topping itself since the first two seasons were so good but season 3 is the best yet. Rick and Morty air Sundays on Adult Swim at 11:30/10:30c.
