4. Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Salem may be less helpful than most of the pets on this list, but how many of them are hundreds of years old and can talk? He was once a witch that was cursed and turned into a cat for his attempts to take over the world. As the family cat, he usually gives the young Sabrina bad advice, even though he clearly loves her and her aunts. Salem can be a bit of a curmudgeon given his situation, but still helps out in the ways that he can. He’s a bit of a conflicted character given that he probably still wants to take over the world, but it doesn’t mean he’s a bad person.

They used a combination of real cats and animatronics to achieve his speech special effects, it didn’t always look great. The show had a small budget, but Salem brought a sardonic sense of humor and sharp wit.

3. Lassie from Lassie

Basically the top dog and one of the most helpful pets on this list. She started out in a novel, made it into her own movies, and eventually made the successful transition to TV. Lassie really started it all with the heroic dog cliché. She was always there for whatever trouble Timmy got himself into and Timmy got into a lot of trouble. Someone really needed to put a GPS or ankle bracelet on this kid, I mean protecting that child was a full-time job for Lassie. Almost all live action appearances of Lassie have been the from the same family of dogs.

The original was a dog named Pal and Pal’s descendants continued to carry on the name for many years. The imagery of Lassie and the titular line of “Timmy’s trapped in a  well,” is iconic and engrained in our pop culture. This pup has appeared in comics, novels, movies, television, radio, toys, and even an animated series.
