Milo Ventimiglia’s Jack will get a lot younger in This Is Us Season 2. Prepare to travel back in time to Papa Pearson’s childhood.

More from This Is Us

Let the flashbacks continue! TV Line reports that This Is Us will delve deeper into Jack’s past, as the series keeps its eye out for a 10-year-old spitting image of Milo Ventimiglia. That’s right, we’re getting a new timeline in Season 2, and it’s all about the origins of everyone’s new favorite TV dad, Papa Pearson. But what does this jump further back in time mean for the second season of This Is Us?

For starters, as TV Line points out, we’ll most likely catch a glimpse at Jack’s dad’s history of abuse in its earliest iterations. This Is Us scratched the surface of Jack’s scumbag father in “The Right Thing To Do” as Jack and Rebecca started nesting before the arrival of the Big Three. With an even younger Jack, we’ll see the depths of his parental struggles and how they informed who he became as a father. More pressingly, as This Is Us tackles the big question on everyone’s mind, how Jack died, more pieces of the puzzle will be introduced little by little. Could the cause of his death be tied to his past, his father, and/or an event that occurred at 10 years old?

It’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility that the looming question about Jack’s mortality connects to more than we currently realize. Knowing This Is Us, going back to Jack’s childhood won’t just serve as fleshing out a larger story. Whether Season 2 explores young Jack’s tumultuous home life or relates another coming of age story to the major mystery, it’s not without purpose.

At this point in time, we’re running on pure speculation. But we can place reasonable bets on the flashbacks to Jack’s childhood holding more weight than they might initially let on. If This Is Us loves anything it’s a parallel between the past and the present. Obviously, the Emmy-nominated breakout hit will double down on the timeline hopping levity, and we can’t wait.
