In the exclusive first look at This Is Us Season 2, Rebecca and Randall talk about adoption, and nobody’s tear ducts are safe.

More from This Is Us

After months of anticipation and weeks of teases, the first footage from Season 2 of This Is Us has finally dropped for fan consumption. In the exclusive scene pulled from September’s season premiere, which you can watch below, Randall turns to Rebecca for advice on adoption. It’s a moment full of emotion as Rebecca and Randall have only recently mended their relationship. Have you got tissues handy?

When we pick up with This Is Us in Season 2, Beth and Randall will be talking about the possibility of adopting a child from two very different viewpoints. Obviously, Randall’s all for it as an homage to his parents, but Beth isn’t quite so sure. As Sterling K. Brown has hinted, Beth and Randall will reach a compromise, and that compromise just might arise as a result of the kind and wise words from his mother.

In the video, Randall asks Rebecca how she and Jack decided to adopt him on that fateful day. Rebecca quickly answers with the perfect response: “There was nothing to decide. The moment we saw you, we knew.” But Randall’s smart enough to know that much more goes into the decision to adopt a child.

Finally, Rebecca gets real with Randall and tells the actual story, the one that’s not as particularly heartwarming to hear. She and Jack’s marriage wasn’t perfect, and neither were they. Having lost a child, Rebecca was grieving the loss and wasn’t receptive to the idea of taking Randall in. But Jack kept pushing, insisting that it was meant to be. Mandy Moore delivers the one line that produces instant tears:

"“He pushed this stranger on me, and that stranger became my son, and that stranger became life, he became you.”"

Yeah, This Is Us isn’t taking any prisoners this season. If a three-minute scene out of context can incite an emotional breakdown, we’re done for. Prepare your tear ducts for Season 2’s forthcoming waterfalls now with the exclusive first look at the season premiere in the video below!
