Fall isn’t officially here just yet, but it is officially fall movie season! Stephen King’s It kicked off the season, breaking several records doing so and taking home a big check. How much, exactly?
More from Box Office
- Five Nights at Freddy’s Piper Rubio age, Instagram, movies and more
- Meg 2: What happened to Suyin? (Why isn’t she in the movie?)
- Dumb Money soundtrack: Which songs play in the comedy?
- Hunchback of Notre Dame live-action remake release updates and everything we know so far
- Barbie 2: Is a Barbie sequel happening?
No other major picture premiered this past weekend, so with no competition, it was easy for It to climb to the top. But let’s give credit where credit is due! It didn’t win the box office by a couple thousand, Pennywise took the crown by a landslide.
Domestically, It collected approximately $123.4 million and $66.3 million in foreign box office ticket sales, for a grand total of $189.7 million.
Instantly, It became the highest grossing Stephen King adaptation of all-time in a weekend and second-highest opening R-rated movie (only behind Deadpool). But that’s not all!
It also holds the record for biggest opening weekend in September. A record previously held by Hotel Transylvania 2. Pennywise is also quickly climbing in the top Horror-Supernatural category, currently sitting at number seven. But being its first weekend, it’s sure to quickly rise to the top. Here are the top seven horror-supernatural movies and their total box office sum:
- The Sixth Sense — $293.5 million
- The Exorcist — $232.9 million
- What Lies Beneath — $155 million
- The Blair Witch Project — $140.5 million
- The Conjuring — $137.4 million
- The Ring — $129.1 million
- It — $123.4 million (so far)
Next: It: Loser’s Club is a massive, terrifying success
Finally, It is the 18th highest grossing film domestically of the year 2017, another number that will change soon as the movie continues its box office run. A few of the movies ahead of it are War of the Planet of the Apes, Moana, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Wonder Woman, and Logan.
