Only a true fan of The Big Bang Theory would have caught all of these references in the series premiere of Young Sheldon on CBS!
With Young Sheldon premiering directly after The Big Bang Theory, it was easy for Sheldon Cooper fans to tune in and watch the character de-age into his nine-year old self. Played by Iain Armitage, the new show follows Sheldon in the late 80s, living with his family in East Texas and attending his first year of high school.
Young Sheldon creates opportunities for audiences to see Cooper family origin stories unfold and introduce new stories for the character.

Even if you’d never seen The Big Bang Theory before (or if you’ve only seen a handful of episodes), Young Sheldon is still a fun, feel-good family comedy.
But if you’re a super-fan of The Big Bang Theory, you may have picked up on these seven references to the series that were planted as connections to previous story-lines:

7) His Southern Accent
In the Young Sheldon premiere, we see first hand why Sheldon was so eager to lose his Texas accent (no mashed potaters for him). Famous scientists don’t have thick Southern accents and Sheldon was determined to acquire a more Midwestern voice, but we’ve seen the Southern accent slip out when he gets frustrated:
6) Model Train Sets
The very opening scene of Young Sheldon features the nine-year old showing off how his model trains can be used to prove the basic laws of physics, but this was also showing fans the beginnings of Sheldon’s obsession with trains, something we’ve seen more than once on The Big Bang Theory:
5) Missy Cooper
Every super-fan of The Big Bang Theory knows that Sheldon is actually a twin to a hilarious, spunky sister named Missy:
Played by Raegan Revord, young Missy even threatens to kick Sheldon in the balls in the Young Sheldon series premiere, which is actually a reference to a scene back in Season 1 of TBBT!
4) The Neighbor’s Chicken
Even the scene with Billy Sparks’ chicken is a reference to TBBT! We saw Sheldon come face-to-face with Billy the bully and his chicken, and it was clear that the chicken had been used as an intimidation tool more than once before. Check out this clip below when Sheldon referred to a time when that same chicken chased him up a tree:
3) Knowledge of Football
With Mr. Cooper as the high school football coach and older brother George as a freshman on the school’s team, football was a central part of the Young Sheldon premiere. While some viewers may have thought that the football-loving Cooper family was a new idea, super-fans already knew that Sheldon was a football expert:
2) Professor Proton TV Show
Even Professor Proton made an appearance in the Young Sheldon premiere! But Sheldon’s dad turned off the potato clock episode before Sheldon could watch the experiment, which explains why he was so eager to see Professor Proton perform the experiment in his apartment:
1) Perfect Pitch
In one of the last scenes of Young Sheldon, we followed “Shelly” into the high school music room where he was able to play a song on the piano just by listening to another instrument. He brushed off the idea of ever becoming a musician, but was told that he has perfect pitch, something we actually already knew about the character:
