There’s still months if not years left to wait for Fox’s Gambit movie to actually debut in theaters, but some newly released plot rumors indicate there’s a new type of superhero film to look forward to, and it’s basically the X-Men on an Ocean’s Eleven type of mission.

The initial report on Gambit was posted by Splash Report, so we need to be cautious of the details provided since they don’t come directly from 20th Century Fox or any of its affiliates. Were the details to have come from a more legitimized source, we could definitely take solace in the Gambit movie actually being one worth seeing, despite all the back and forth going on behind the scenes. Nevertheless, the plot details provided describe a very entertaining adventure for Remy Lebeau, as well as several mutant comrades to join him on said journey. Check out the full description below:

Remy Lebeau (Channing Tatum) is on trial in New-Orleans. He’s considered a huge security risk. We flashback to almost 25 years before. Master thief Luke Lebeau runs into eight-year-old Gambit while doing a heist. Impressed by his skills, he offers to take the mutant orphan under his wings. Raised alongside other strays he calls “cousins”, the teenage Gambit becomes the superstar of the Thief Guild. He encounters Bella Donna Boudreaux while on the run from the police. Sparks immediately fly since Bella is also a fellow mutant. Their love is directly prohibited by both families since the Boudreaux are sworn enemies of the Lebeau clan. Deciding to unite the two sides, Remy offers to have the two clans team up on a HUGE heist to profit both families. Of course, the whole plan goes awry, and in the chaos, Maryanne Boudreaux shoots and kill Luke Lebeau.

We jump to 10 years later; Gambit is hired to do a job in Paris to steal something from the Louvre Museum. It was apparently a test job to see if he still has it. His mysterious employer is revealed to be Nathaniel Essex a.k.a. Mr. Sinister. He offers Gambit 40 million to recover a mysterious trunk that was stolen by the Boudreaux clan. It will be auctioned off during the yearly Thieves Ball where all the criminal organizations in the world meet up. It uses New Orleans’ Mardi Gras celebrations as a cover. Gambit decides to enlist a crew of mutants to pull off this seemingly impossible heist…

Regardless of whether or not the plot details are accurate, the story intended to unfold in Gambit is quite different from anything we’ve seen so far—at least when it comes to superhero movies. Most movies have followed the same trope of a hero fighting a villain to save the world and it’s getting old. Something new needs to take hold in the realm of superheroes, and an Ocean’s Eleven type mission for Remy Lebeau is exactly the kind of thing that could light a path for more unique story-lines.

Assuming Gambit does open the door for individual superhero stories to be told, we could probably see a side of the X-Men’s universe that goes overlooked. People and more importantly fans, tend to forget that the X-Men and mutants in general aren’t just superheroes, they’re people like you and me. They go through their day to day lives, experiencing life similar to anyone else in the world. The whole discriminatory fight between mutants and humans is because mutants wants to be treated just like everyone else when they’re not. Mutants just want everyone to understand that they have lives too, and the experiences therein are what we could see in future superhero movies.

Instead of just focusing on characters like the X-Men saving the world, adventures like Wade Wilson’s journey to cure himself of cancer in Deadpool are the kind of exploits we want to see other mutants like Remy Lebeau have. They need to be seen in everyday situations where the characters are at the center of the plot, rather than the whole recycled premise of superhumans trying to save the world being the main thing. Mutants can still use their abilities to save others in movies, but the main goal should be there for them to save themselves instead of focusing on a random group of unnamed people.

Hopefully, the Gambit movie does take a different path then most superhero movies because the old ploy of the X-Men saving the world isn’t going to cut it for much longer. We’ve seen the progress superhero movies have made over the past 15 years and not much has changed. When that realization begins to dawn on fans, Fox is going to have to change the way they develop superhero movies or fall to the wayside as interest in them becomes extinct. Gambit holds all the cards in this fight, with the future of superhero movies potentially depending on what Fox does with the movie.
