Shadowhunters: Alisha Wainwright and Isaiah Mustafa talk Season 3 at NYCC

Shadowhunters‘ Alisha Wainwright and Isaiah Mustafa tease the upcoming season and share how they’d like to see more emotional development on the show.
When Shadowhunters returns for Season 3 in April 2018, both Luke and Maia will be confronted with new challenges as leaders of the werewolf pack. Alisha Wainwright and Isaiah Mustafa sat down at New York Comic Con to discuss upcoming relationship tensions and layered character development in Season 3.
“I think one of the wonderful things about the Season 2 finale is that Maia finished her rom-com movie,” Wainwright said. “She gets kidnapped, she gets rescued by her boyfriend, and then they enjoy a lovely night together, but he has to skip off and take care of his business.” When Shadowhunters returns this April, Maia and Simon’s relationship will be realistically complex.
Wainwright revealed that Maia will start off Season 3 in a “happy place,” but she’ll soon find out about Simon’s secret collaboration with the Seelie Queen. “I think what we will find is that Simon did some dealings behind her back,” Wainwright said. “Not only what does that say for Simon, but what does that say for their relationship and trust? I think you’ll really enjoy seeing how Simon and Maia work through problems and problem solve together as a team.”

Isaiah Mustafa also commented on how he’d like to see character and relationship development this season. “As a fan of the show, you want to see how Maia reacts to adversity,” Mustafa said. “You have an idea of how she reacts based off of what you’ve seen already, but that’s almost like the physicalness of it… I would love to see a little more emotional stuff, just a little more tension stuff like the things that go on between a girlfriend and boyfriend.”

Though Simon kept his negotiations a secret in the Season 2 finale, Luke’s secret about being a werewolf was uncovered by his partner, Ollie. “I can’t give anything away, but all I can tell is that she is very persistent,” Mustafa said. “She will not stop until she gets the answer she’s looking for, but the answer she’s looking for may not be what she thinks it is.”
