#2 “Part of Your World,” The Little Mermaid

Sung By: Jodi Benson

I Can See What’s Happening: Ariel is mesmerized by the creations made by mankind and doesn’t believe people on land are as bad as her father says they are. She begins to swim around her cavern, looking at her large collection of items from land and still feeling empty inside. What Ariel wants is to be on land and be part of our world.

Favorite Line: “But who cares? No big deal. I want more. I want to be where the people are. I wanna see, wanna see them dancing.”

Why It’s Part of Our World: This is a beautiful song, but the reason it is still one of the most popular Disney songs today because of the “I wanna be where the people are” meme. The song comes to mind whenever we wish we were somewhere else, but are not able to.

#1 “A Whole New World,” Aladdin

Sung By: Brad Kane and Lea Salonga

I Can See What’s Happening: After wooing over the Princess of Agrabah into accompanying him on a magic carpet ride, Aladdin and Jasmine fly off into the night to see the world below around them like never before!

Favorite Line: “But when I’m way up here, It’s crystal clear, That now I’m in a whole new world with you.”

Why It’s Part of Our World: When it comes to duets, no one does it quite like Disney, and “A Whole New World” is about as good as it gets. In addition to being a song which resonates with viewers of all ages, it marked the turning point in Aladdin and Jasmine’s relationship making it that much more special.
